Dr. Mulligan is a leader in cardiothoracic surgery. He has performed hundreds of lung transplants and thousands of other thoracic surgeries. He's also the Director of Minimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery and regularly performs and teaches video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

Dr. Mulligan is clinically busy in lung transplantation and lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS). He also is the surgeon in the Pacific Northwest who performs pulmonary endarterectomies for chronic pulmonary embolic disease. He performs a range of lung cancer resections regularly and is considered a national expert in thoracoscopic lobetomies, and VATS segmentectomy (video-assisted thoracic surgery). He leads regional and national courses on the subject.
